FarReach is the initiative of B. Maurene White, R.N., BTh, Ba (Anthropology), Dip. Ed. McGill. Her professional experience, training in research plus scientific knowledge of anatomical evidence that the prepuce is a valuable organ and nerve plexus, leads to questions on why it is not as respectfully treated and protected as other important sensory organs. Q: What is the funny looking thing at the end of the penis? A: The Man. Although FarReach issues are no laughing matter, this forthright little joke presents our approach to supporting not only his right to intact genitalia, but the man himself. The man, the whole being, feelings, welfare and health is a person of infinite value. Our concern is to hold each individual in high regard with respect and compassion. It is also our intention never to objectify anyone according to presence or absence of body parts, prepuce included. Most circumcised men, and many women also, especially it there is cultural and religious predisposition against it, are Initially very disconcerted to find that the prepuce has any value. This may be followed by confusion and cognitive dissonance when they realize circumcision actually means amputation and destruction of this small but precious organ. Much of North American society has been brainwashed to believe the image of the circumcised penis is the look of superiority. The dichotomy of resistance to, vs. integration of the information may be profoundly angering as well. However painful these are healthy initial reactions. Gradually, as insight builds on earlier insight, understanding and a degree of acceptance comes about, assuaging and replacing the initial reactions. Please be aware we are with you, for you, and never against you. This project is not a critique of men who have been circumcised, but of the process through which the phenomenon of circumcision is perpetuated. Please understand that our efforts are always oriented to assuaging and healing. Many thousands of men ,100,000 al last count, are benefitting from this information, particulary through foreskin restoration which leads to physical and psychological healing. FarReach asks a number of global questions on the relationship of the normally functioning prepuce to general health throughout life including long term healh of men and their partners too. A series of research projects, consiousness raising, re-educational, and fund raising projects are proposed towards assuaging the harms of circumcision and other forms of genital cutting. Research is a primary goal of FarReach. Research is oriented towards promoting health and preventing further injury and disease related to initial injuries and losses of the human prepuce. We propose original, multidisciplinary, primary and longitudinal research on the health of the prepuce and ill identify and enumerate harms associated with its loss. Why Re-Education? Since so many superstitions and myths (errors) about the human prepuce and circumcision exist in public consciousness, replacing these, or re-educating people with sound evidential information is long overdue. Providing the public with accurate, foundational scientific knowledge about the prepuce should gradually promote valuing of this important nerve pexus and decrease the compulsion many people have to eliminate it from sight and knowledge as quickly as possible. Assuaging, the action verb carefully situated within the acronym FarReach, stands for our plans to develop methods of healing for all, male and female, who perceive and experience loss and disappointment associated with injury and amputation of the prepuce. An hypothesis of FarReach is that restoration of the prepuce assuages many immediate problems and mpay prevent long term adverse seuellae attributable to circumcision. At this edit March 30, 2007 an estimated 100,000 men are engaged in 'foreskin restoration' and report satisfaction with the results. They are not restoring to prevent these adverse sequellae - they are restoring for fun! The minimum increase in doubling sexual sensation and enjoyment, and lessening the effort necessary to achieve ejaculation is their goal. The possibility of preventing adverse sequellae might be an interesting benefit, but isn't their jprimary goal. Respecting the Intact Body is a Human Rights Issue Every human being has the right to safety from injury or destruction of any part of his or her body. The right to protective and erogenous intact genitalia is basic at every age. No one, doctor, midwife or other birth attendante rights of another individual by amputating any part of the genitalia, including the prepuce, especially at birth, when he is so vulnerable and incapable of refusing consent and otherwise defend himself. FarReach is indebted to Dr. Margaret Somerville, Gale Professor of Medicine Ethics and Law, McGill University for her foundational statement on this topic: FarReach is indebted also to Dr. John R. Taylor et al who authored the foundational anatomy of the prepuce, actually the first original anatomical study in over 100 years: Overview "The prepuce is an integral, normal part of the external genitalia that forms the anatomical covering of the glans penis and clitoris. The outer epithelium has the protective function of internalising the glans (clitoris and penis), urethral meatus (in the male) and the inner preputial epithelium, thus decreasing irritation and contamination. The prepuce is a specialized, junctional mucocutaneous tissue which marks the boundary between mucosa and skin; it is similar to the eyelids, labia minora, anus and lips. The male prepuce also provides adequate mucosa and skin to cover the entire penis during erection . The unique innervation of the prepuce establishes its function as erogenous tissue." Ritualistic circumcision involves the involuntary cutting off of normal, healthy genital tissue from infants and children for religious, societal or theoretical medical benefits. Although the amount of genital tissue removed is variable, the penile prepuce is destroyed in all male circumcsion, and in females the clitoral prepuce is removed in a Fourcroy grade 1 circumcision. Injury and disease prevention and health promotion is the basis of FarReach's existence. We intend a series of studies to determine whether loss of the foreskin is associated with particular conditions and diseases, and whether men undertaking foreskin restoration are able to prevent and attenuate them." |
